National Harbor, MD (March 26, 2024) – CTAM, the industry’s entertainment and technology marketing organization, today announces the expansion of its StreamSafely website in collaboration with its affiliate, CTAM Canada, to help combat content piracy and provide viewers a centralized hub (www.streamsafely.ca) to find safe streaming options. In January, a report classified Canada as a piracy “hotspot,” with data showing that pirate site visits in the country grew roughly 50% between 2018 and 2023. Other countries classified as hotspots included Sweden, Hong Kong and Qatar.

Worldwide, there were 229.4 billion global visits to piracy sites in 2023 with TV piracy representing 45% and film representing 13% of visits. Nearly three quarters (72%) of consumers who paid for pirate services using a credit card were later hit with fraudulent charges vs 18% for people who don’t visit pirate sites. And 44% were victims of identity theft, compared to only 10% of people who don’t frequent piracy apps or sites.

CTAM’s StreamSafely.com site, the industry’s only consumer-facing effort to combat piracy, launched in January 2020 as a comprehensive, centralized hub for the “unwitting pirate” – consumers who stumble upon and stream pirated content without knowing it. The site helps viewers with content discovery and solves for streaming decision fatigue with a dedicated Where to Watch guide for the latest popular programming across a wide variety of streaming networks, along with comprehensive information and resources about the dangers of content piracy. Since its launch, more than 2.25M consumers have visited the site, with over a million visitors in 2023 alone.
